The inspiration for my work comes from the perception that metals, as usually manufactured by humans, are polished, shiny and pristine. I want to instil life in them, age, ruggedness, colour. For me stones are a source of endless inspiration, since they are the essence of time, permanence. Stones have endured the ages, exposing crevices, streaks that are the results of chemical fusions from times immemorial. I work mainly in silver, using techniques that somehow help me to achieve some of the aims mentioned above: reticulation, patination, oxidation. Enamelling has allowed me to bring colour, vibrant life into my jewels. The use of different enamelling techniques can, for instance, emphasise surface treatment, if bass-relief is used under transparent enamels. The transparency can reach especial value with the incorporation of plique-à-jour to parts of the piece. The use of graduated colours can be reminiscent of volume in a two dimensional work. In my work each piece is unique, carefully designed, made almost entirely by hand. I enjoy discussing a piece with the future owner, it adds another dimension to the pleasure of wearing it. I tend to sell directly or in very few occasions I have offered pieces to galleries. I am a member of the Cambridge Open Studios, ACJ Cambridge and associate member of the Enamellers Society.
